A miniature hand-bound sixty-four-page book to appease the hopeless romantic within me.

This book started as a design school project, which quickly turned into an extended love letter to my significant other. When I was a kid, I’d always see the “52 Reasons Why I Love You” DIY projects on Pinterest, and always wanted to make one. Having grown up, however, I realized that maybe gluing pieces of paper onto a deck of cards was a bit too elementary for me. I took the idea and translated into a pocket-sized book for him to carry around if he ever needed a reminder.

Printing a few pages at a time, double-sided, would've been a complete waste of paper.

Signature Setup & Printing Strategy

The beauty about creating a miniature book is that it barely requires any resources. On the contrary, it's an amazing way to use up scrap materials in a creative way. After calculating the amount of pages I needed to create this little book, I had come to the conclusion that it would be a waste of paper if I wanted to print only a few pages at a time on a single sheet. With this in mind, I came up with a printing strategy that would maximize the usage of each sheet and minimize waste.

Printing was reduced down to two 8.5" x 11" sheets of paper for 8 signatures — or 64 pages.

Assembly

Many tests were created to prepare for the assembly of this little book. Using scrap leather (it was super thick and almost impossible to work with), two types of needles, an awl and some waxed thread, I created a practice piece. To reinforce the "crafty" handmade feel, I purposely cut my signatures by ripping them, exposing the unfinished edges in the texblock.
