A gamified safe driving campaign to build awareness of teen driver safety issues.

Parachute commissioned a set of video-game style illustrations and animations for their 2021 teen safe driving campaign, National Teen Driver Safety Week, that woud cheekily present darker themes in a bright fun illustrative style.

#SpeedIsNoGame was a response to careless and dangerous driving expectations depicted in video games promoting the message that, unlike in video games, dangerous driving has real consequences.

There was a need for several outputs of the main campaign artwork; the banner had to work at different dimensions for cross-platform exposure (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and the Parachute website). The main requirement for the illustrations was that they be used primarily on the Parachute website, using the right specs to be shared on socials.

August – September 2021

Centred around the theme #SpeedIsNoGame, I drew inspiration from old school 8-bit game art to create a set of nostalgic illustrations and animations for the campaign.

Illustrating Scenarios

A handful of illustrations needed to be crafted to outline different hazardous driving scenarios. After Parachute confirmed the artistic direction of the campaign, I sketched out some ideas for the following scenarios: speeding, speeding past pedestrians, speeding past cyclists, speeding at a train crossing, distracted driving using a phone, alcohol impairment, and drug impairment.

Design Challenge

To create a set of video-game inspired illustrations and animations for different hazardous driving scenarios using a limited colour palette. Oh, and because we're in Canada, all pieces must be in English and French.

Response

Three different video-game style concepts were proposed to Parachute: 1) a top-down isometic style; 2) a retro pixel art style; and 3) a modern 2D platformer style. The palette was expanded by creating a tint and a shade for each colour to add gradation to the artwork, giving it a bit more dimension.

To promote the campaign outside of social media, we created a flyer in both English and French, which would be handed out in schools.
